Hello and Welcome to my blog. This is not a serious blog, mainly because I don't really have anything to say that others haven't already said, and said more eloquently than I am able to.

It exists because I was surprised by a price increase for the email service I'd been using for more than a decade. Given the plethora of free email options available it did not seem reasonable to not only be charged $12 each month but to have a $3/mo price increase added to that.

A free Google Gmail account, a domain name, and for $12/year I now have a more stable email address and a large number of aliases -- a much better and cheaper arrangement than at my former email service provider.

And with a domain name, why not set up a blog, just for the (technical) experience? Thus we are here.

Since this is for experience, I am hosting it on a personal machine rather than a web hosting company (don't want to spend the money) or a blogging site (too easy).

I am using Pelican, a Python-based static site generator and, not liking much any of the themes available for it, am working on developing my own theme based roughly on the example blog page for Twitter Bootstrap. It is a bit of a challenge, my limited experience with HTML and CSS being from the HTML-3/CSS-1 days.

A note about the domain name: Mount Neva (image at the top of page) is a nearby and favorite mountain I've been to the top of many times. It has routes ranging from walkups to enjoyable moderate snow climbs to technical rock routes, and is located in the beautiful Indian Peaks Wilderness of Colorado just south of Rocky Mountain National Park.

So that is the story of how this blog came to be. Now let's see if I can think of anything else to post here... :-(
